TOE (Transoesophageal Echocardiogram)

Ultrasound investigation of heart structure and function

Point 1

Why would you need TOE?

A TOE allows us to visualise the structure and function of your heart in greater detail than a standard echo. In particular it may aid in diagnosis of certain forms of structural or congenital heart disease, allow treatment planning and also guide treatment during minimally invasive procedures. It may be used in conjunction with other forms of cardiac imaging such as cardiac MRI or structural heart disease CT scanning.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases, 15-20 minutes.

Usually the procedure is performed with conscious sedation and you will remember very little about the procedure. You may notice some throat discomfort following the procedure and if this persists or worsens, please let Prof Shand know.

The risk of a complication is very low with a TOE - <1%. Rare complications include aspiration of stomach contents into the lung (we ask you to fast for the procedure for this reason), damage to teeth, oesophageal (food pipe) perforation or inflammation.
