Ultrasound investigation of heart structure and function

Point 2

What is an Echocardiogram (echo)?

This is an investigation to examine the structure and function of your heart muscle and valves. Ultrasound allows us to visualise heart function in real time.

Point 1

Why would you need Echocardiogram?

An Echo allows us to visualise the structure and function of your heart. It gives us information about heart muscle function and heart valve function.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases, 20-30 minutes.

Very occasionally, our sonographer will have to press firmly on your chest with the ultrasound probe to get diagnostic quality images. Any discomfort is usually brief and will not result in any short or long term consequences.

Once the echo has been performed, Dr Shand will need to review the scan. If this has been done on the day of or in advance of your initial consultation, Dr Shand will explain the findings with you at this stage.
